Endodontics or root canal is the process by which the nerve is removed from the tooth. The canal is then filled with a rubber material and sealer so bacteria is sealed out of the tooth.
If a patient is experiencing pain with a tooth due to an inflammed nerve or abcess there is only two choices the patient has: extraction of the tooth or root canal in order to save or keep the tooth. After a root canal in most cases the tooth needs to have a crown in order to restore the tooth properly and prevent future failure of the tooth structure.
A common misconception is that a root canal is a painful procedure. Actually, root canals are similar to having a cavity filled, producing minimal pain.
Common causes for the need of endodontic treatment:
- Inflamed/infected tooth pulp
- Severe sensitivity to hot and cold elements
- Tooth decay
- Chipped or broken tooth
- Blow to the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness near the infected tooth
- For restorative reasons if not enough tooth structure exists.
